Dad, You're a Great Sport Pot Let your dad know you think he's a good sport with this attractive pot. It makes a great holder for a plant, or else Dad can use it to hold office supplies, tools, or other items. Our local craft store carries of hundreds of these small decorated wooden shapes, but if your store doesn't you can paint your own shapes or else use stickers or images cut out from magazines or catalogs. You can use an actual photo of Dad, but make sure to get permission first. We prefer using color photocopies so we don't ruin our originals and the copy is much thinner and easier to decoupage.
6 inch terracotta pot
White acrylic paint
Red acrylic paint
Paint brush
Blue acrylic paint pen
Color photocopy of photo
Decoupage glue
Varnish or acrylic sealer (optional)
Wooden sports shapes
Tacky glue
Cover your work surface with newspapers. Paint the bottom of the pot with a coat of the white paint and let dry for at least an hour, or as directed by the manufacturer. Repeat with a second coat of white paint once dry. Paint the rim of the pot with a coat of the red paint and let dry for at least an hour, or as directed by the manufacturer. Repeat with a second coat of the red paint once dry. Let dry thoroughly. Along the rim write the phrase "Dad, You're a Great Sport!" with the paint pen. Let dry thoroughly before handling. Using the decoupage glue, add the photo to the pot. Paint over the entire pot, including the photo, with the glue to make for an even finish. If desired, coat the pot again with the decoupage glue, or else finish with a varnish or acrylic sealer according to the package directions. Sealing the pot is especially important if your Dad might use this as an outdoor planter. Once the varnish has thoroughly dried, glue the sports shapes on the pot, making sure to spread them out on all the sides of the pot. Make sure the pot has thoroughly dried before adding a plant or wrapping for Dad.
